Courage & Fear

Part I: The Climb

Timmy is a young boy who was born timid, with a fragile body. He was constantly teased by the his fellow peers in school. One day, the gym teacher brought them to bouldering wall and everyone was tasked to climb the wall to see how high can they reach. One student after another climbed the wall. Now, it was Timmy’s turn, his heart was beating so hard, it sounds like drums playing when a scary scene is about to unveil in a horror movie. <Sound effects>

Suddenly, one of his peers shouted “Little Timmy is teary, maybe he will pissy”. Immediately everyone around him started bursting into laughter. <Sound of drums> Timmy squeezed his eyes shut to hold back his tears, unsuccessfully. Timmy never asked to be born this way, he never asked to be the laughing stock of his class, he never asked to climb a stupid wall.

Suddenly, a wave of realisation washed over him, it’s just a stupid wall, a stupid wall. Timmy kept muttering those words over and over again and he lifted his head to face the wall. Slowly, the laughter began to drown out, replaced by the sounds of his heart beats once more. This time, it was the sound of drums in an action movie. <Sound of drums>

Timmy extended his hand to reach the wall, and slowly started to climb. His fear remains as the drums of his heart continue to beat. Bit by bit, he climbed higher up the wall. Bit by bit, the laughter started to die down. Until finally, Timmy’s hand touches the tip of the wall.

Frank D Roosevelt once said, Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear. So any time you are faced with an obstacle that frightens you. Take a deep breath to build the fortitude within you then push through, knowing that you will come out stronger on the other side.
